We provide mentoring, educational support, career guidance, life skills development, and community engagement activities. We are passionate about helping youth navigate the challenges they face and supporting them in their personal growth and success.

Jack Solomon

Lead Program Director

As an alternative school Head Master in one of the most disadvantage cities in America, Jack Solomon recognized the need for youth to have diversions from the dangers of crime and the lifestyles that come with it.  With this experience, he realized that the need of mental, educational, and financial services were necessary focal points. Developing Our Youth was created to provide opportunities, resources, and guidance to young individuals, enabling them to realize their full potential and become active contributors to society. Through our programs and initiatives, we aim to foster personal growth, develop essential skills, promote leadership, and cultivate a sense of social responsibility among the youth. Dedicated professional with over two decades of experience serving youth, Jack Solomon is a graduate of Alcorn State University with a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics and two master degrees in Secondary Education and Guidance & Counseling. Beginning his career as a middle school substitute teacher, he progressed to the role of Dean of Students, overseeing discipline for over four hundred students.  All this while also coaching basketball and achieving remarkable success, including ten downstate appearances in 20 years. Beyond his educational roles, he serves as the Program Director for our non-profit and co-founded the Illinois Bobcats, a traveling youth basketball program. Throughout his career, Jack Solomon has positively impacted the lives of thousands.

Rod Chaney

Executive Director

With four decades of experience in community resource development, Rod progressed from a volunteer coach to roles in Municipal Project Management, identifying and bringing resources to communities to improve the lives of youth and their families. He held senior executive positions, including Director of various Park Districts and my own foundation, an alternative school. His recent focus involves enhancing financial outreach for DEVELOPING OUR YOUTH by seeking more resources through donations, grants, or in-kind products/services.  As a Life Coach, he is dedicated to giving back to the community, working with vulnerable youth, and providing resources to shape their future and overcome present challenges.

Kendall A. Parrott

Grant Writer/ Project Coordinator

Kendall Parrott boasts a distinguished 46-year tenure as a dedicated public servant. Commencing his professional journey in 1977 as a paraprofessional and basketball coach, he adeptly honed his communication skills by actively engaging with students and parents, ensuring the schools remained open beyond regular hours. His unwavering commitment to the growth and success of every child he encountered marked him as a fervent advocate.

In 1982, Kendall transitioned to a role as a supervisor and coach at the Harvey Park District, where he played a pivotal role in formulating and implementing structured recreation and sports programs. Throughout his extensive 41-year career within parks and recreations, he assumed various key roles, including Athletic Director, Superintendent of Recreation, Superintendent of Maintenance, Risk Manager, Grant Administrator, and ultimately, Executive Director. His multifaceted contributions have left an indelible mark on the field of public service.

Kiara Logan

Program Coordinator

As a DePaul graduate and former educator with over thirteen years of experience, Kiara observed that many students in Chicago were often reduced to data points, emphasizing test scores as the sole measure of their academic progress. This approach left numerous students underserved. Recognizing the need for a more personalized learning approach, she founded Edyoucation LLC, a consulting company dedicated to developing tailored educational plans, academic interventions, and pathways through trade and vocational education. Her mission is to foster a more equitable and inclusive education system that celebrates diversity and prepares all students for a successful future.

Karen Moore

K-12 Special Services Coordinator

Karen is a seasoned special education teacher with 26 years of experience, holding a bachelor's degree from Illinois State University and a master's degree from Governors State University. Currently serving as the chair of the Illinois Education Association Human and Civil Rights Committee, she also plays a significant role at the national level as a member of the board of directors and the chair of the National Education Association Black Caucus. Beyond her teaching role, Karen is a passionate advocate for public education, dedicating years to training and supporting others on their journey to leadership.

Her focus has been on education and counseling in school and therapeutic settings. With a strong passion for promoting social-emotional wellness and life skill development among her clients, Devona believes that expanding these tools can significantly enhance life experiences for many.

Simi is a Chemical Engineering graduate from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and he possesses significant experience as an engineering and consulting leader. Certified as a Six Sigma Black Belt, he has demonstrated success in various areas, including quality control, process optimization, project management, and lean implementation, within diverse business and manufacturing environments.

Dondra Harper

Youth & Community Compliance Coordinator

The Fiscal Compliance Coordinator for Youth and Community Development reports to the Director of Billing, Payroll, and Contract Administration. This role supports the agency in ensuring fiscal compliance with grants and contracts related to Youth and Community Development programs. Responsibilities include managing the collection of necessary documents for timely billing submissions, contributing to the development of reports for the Business Office and Youth and Community Development leadership, and assisting in the implementation of fiscal procedures that align with grant and contract compliance. The position requires effective oral and written communication skills and a foundational understanding of the young people/customers served by Developing Our Youth, including participation in basic trauma training and the ability to apply that training when interacting with them.
